With two stories of onlookers at The Great Hall, Haviah Mighty brought out an explosive performance to cap off Saturday night’s Wavelength Winter Festival 2020.
Her set was filled with fan favorites from her acclaimed 2019 album,13th Floor. The album was released last spring and has had hundreds of thousands of streams worldwide since then. The crowd sang along to “Blame”, “Fugazi”, and “Wishy Washy” which she performed in perfect choreography with sister, Omega Mighty.
With an energy that would put Travis Scott to shame, she pulled out every verb in the book to hype the midnight crowd into a frenzy. Running, jumping, whining, and twerking around the stage, Mighty didn’t miss a syllable in any of her rapid fire verses. It was a spectacle to watch the artist move seamlessly from rapping, to singing, to hyping the crowd without stopping for a breath in between.
She finished off the set and left the crowd yearning for the one song expected out of the performance, her defiant and empowering anthem “In Women Colour”. The audience stuck around chanting for a proper conclusion to the night, which Mighty fully obliged. She jumped back on stage and performed a hair-raising rendition of the hit single that left the crowd tingling as she spit the final bars of the song.
Last year, Haviah won the Polaris Music Prize for her album13th Floor, collaborated with icons like Sean Leon and Juno nominee Clairmont the Second, and had her track “Vamonos” was featured on HBO’s hit series Insecure. Despite a wildly successful 2019,Mighty is set to have a record year in 2020. Wavelength was the first stop in a North American/UK tour that will culminate in her performance at the massive Montreal festival Osheaga this summer.
