Rap has remained in the forefront of the city’s image and exposure in the last few years due to the success of several male acts including Drake and Tory Lanez, however the Toronto R&B scene is just as hot and we have a lot of women to thank for that.

Not only are they putting on for Toronto, they are building quite a following in the city. Get to know the talented roster of underrated R&B gems below.

Staasia Daniels

Staasia Daniels is an emerging R&B singer-songwriter from Toronto, who first appeared on the scene in 2011. She is a sultry, R&B powerhouse with the voice to match. Staasia’s take on R&B touches on the dreamy and steamy sides of the genre, which leaves the listener wanting more. Some of her most popular songs include Peanut Butter, Nowhere, and the catchy single  Voicemail. Staasia is not only a great singer but she’s an amazing performer which translates in her riveting live performances. If you’re in the mood for Alternative R&B, this multifaceted singer-songwriter is your girl. Widely known for her single, Wild World which dropped in 2017, was also a recipient of Bell Media’s MuchFACT online music video funding. Doubling as a business owner and entrepreneur, Tanisha is also the founder of an entertainment company NWYE (Not What You Expected), where she continues to take the city by storm, providing creative facilities, artist development and so much more. Jayd Ink

Jayd Ink is a singer-songwriter with a voice one can only describe as delightful and ear catching. Her sound is rooted in a mixture of Hip Hop, Reggae, and Dancehall with infused R&B. Jayd Ink also appeared on CBC’s The Launch in 2018, which exposed the Toronto singer to new listeners across the country. The accomplished entertainer has performed alongside K.Camp and DJ Whoo Kid and was one of NOW Magazine’s “Toronto Musicians to Watch in 2017”. The singer recently collaborated with Dutch/Armenian artist Full Crate on their song Lowkey, with an equally stunning visual that has amassed over 500K views on YouTube. With lustrous melodies and an ethereal voice to match, Jayd Ink will leave you wanting to hear more after each song. 

Kennedy Rd.

Named after one of Scarborough’s busiest intersections, Kennedy Rd. is another notable Toronto R&B native that you should add to your playlist. Known for her singles “Falling” and “King of Hearts”, which amassed hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify, her sound is the perfect blend of R&B-soul. The singer recently released a 7-minute EP titled Summer Drive Pt 1, which includes the mellow and slow tempo tracks “Vibration” and “Get2KnowMe”. 


Meet R&B singer-songwriter and performer, GNA. Her music will have you up, dancing in the mirror with the amount of “bad b*tch” anthems in her repertoire. GNA’s EPs Trinity Volume 1 and Trinity Volume 2, has racked up over 200,000+ combined streams on Spotify with standouts including “Hot Like Fire” and “BAM (Been A Minute).” The Canadian-born singer also collaborated with rapper Tory Lanez and reggae royalty Sizzla in 2018. If you don’t know where to start, “Craig” is sure to get you off your feet and have you chanting: “You ain’t gotta lie Craig”.
