This Afro-Caribbean music festival will be the perfect way to end your summer

Just as the summer is coming to an end, there is a new Afro-Caribbean festival coming to Toronto at the end of August. On Saturday, August 24th, the first-ever “Plantain” Afro-Caribbean music festival will be taking place at Fort York Garrison Commons from 3PM to 10PM.

The “Plantain” festival aims to feature a variety of food and music from a multitude of cultures including Latin, Caribbean, African, and Canadian.

On the website, the organizer states: “Canada’s inaugural Afro-Caribbean Music Festival aims to bring together multiple communities through the power of music, food and culture. Toronto is renowned for music festivals, but until now, none highlight the beautiful energy that Afrobeats, Baile Funk, Dancehall, Reggae, Reggaeton & Soca all elicit. Finally, a music festival with our music, our flavour and our vibes! Join us to enjoy the sounds, tastes & vibe the diaspora has produced! Why PLANTAIN? Because no matter where you grew up or how you say it, everyone loves plantain! Come through for something sweet.”

Including a variety of performances touting live music acts playing Afrobeat, Soca, Reggae, Reggaeton, and Baile Funk, some of the international headliners for the festival feature Chromatic Sound from Jamaica, DJ Kevin Crown from Grenada, and DJ Tunez from Nigeria.

That’s not all, Plantain will also feature local entertainers including Toronto podcast Extra Gravy with hosts Marlon Palmer and Big Norm, along with Toronto DJ’s including Fire Kid Steenie, D-Roc of Genesys Sound and many more.

The organizers also promise a wide variety of food trucks and vendors serving the best in Caribbean, Latin American, and African foods, as well as complimentary ancestral arts with surprises and giveaways.
